CeeNOC Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is CeeNoc?

CeeNOC is a service, maintained by Cee Tone Technology, which monitors your public servers and network devices providing email alerts in the event of a service change.

Currently, we monitor any combination of a hostname/IP address, protocols such as TCP, UDP and ICMP, in addition to specific ports for TCP and UDP. Additonally, we provide checksum verifications of static www site pages.

These checks provide a lot of flexibility. For instance, if you want to check if your SSH server on a particular host is listening, we send a TCP check to that server's port 22. Of course, if you have SSH running on a non-standard port, just indicate that as you fill in the setup forms.

  • If I need to be notified about the status of my hosts, what forms of notifications do you allow?

Any email address is appropriate. If you would prefer to be notified on a cell phone or other mobile device, most carriers provide email address forms of your phone number which translate to SMS.

  • How often are checks on my hosts performed?

All hosts are checked at approximately ten minute intervals, and you are notified after two missed connections. Contact us if you are interested in lower intervals with our enterprise solutions.

  • Do I have to open up any holes in my firewall for CeeNOC to work?

CeeNOC is aimed at hosts/ports/protocols and static web pages which are publicly accessible, so the simple answer is no.

However, please contact us if you would like to have us perform specific checks through your firewalling device.

Please note that while CeeNOC is performing simple checks, it is doing it from several different IP addresses on a relatively frequent basis. An overzealous sysadmin or intrusion detection/prevention system might find this suspicious, so it might be necessary to white-list our source IP addresses. You will be notified in the event that our server IPs so that you can change your white lists accordingly.

  • How is pricing structured for CeeNOC?

Each item is defined as a single check based on a unique host, port and protocol combination or each individual web page.

Contact us for specific pricing for your configuration.

  • Do you monitor "X" outside of the standard TCP/UDP/ICMP?

At this point of our product, we are providing a limited set of services to be monitored. Our current solutions, however, provide a great degree of flexibility.

For instance, while we do not perform specific SSH checks which confirm your SSH banner (yet), we can check if TCP on port 22, the standard IANA port for SSH which confirms that the port is listening for a TCP-based protocol. For more information on the standard IANA-assigned ports, check here here or take a look at /etc/services on a Unix box.

However, we do have a schedule of other specific checks that will be rolled out in the near future.

If you have a specific request, please feel free to let us know.

  • What makes you qualified to be providing such a service?

Cee Tone Technology staff are long-time systems administrators, with experience in the NOC environment ("network operations center"), not to mention with an array of packages and systems that perform network monitoring.

The current version of the CeeNOC product is identical to our method of monitoring our current client base. And we have been doing this for years. We are proud to be aware of client outages and degradations quickly; often quicker than the clients themselves. Our response time is fast, and we would like to expand that advantage to others.

  • Who do you expect to utilize CeeNOC?

There are two main audiences for CeeNOC.

First, IT staffs that are short on time, yet in need of an extra set of eyes on production servers and network devices.

Second, there are lots of single-digit technical consulting firms around. Most do not have the ability to maintain the software and infrastructure to keep 24x7 monitoring operational.

In both cases, you have neither the time or resources to perform your own robust monitoring and alerting system with inbuilt redundancy. That is why CeeNOC makes sense for so many.

You can preempt problems with your production servers and network devices that keep you a step ahead of the panic-infused phone calls.

  • What kind of enterprise-level service monitoring can you provide? How is it different than the standard packages offered?

There are two scenarios in which you might be interested in our enterprise level services:

    1. Your firm needs to monitor and provide alerts for more than 50 unique hosts/ports/protocols, at different intervals than our standard packages.

    2. Your firm needs hosts to monitor within a firewall perimeter, you can not allow external checks going through that perimeter and you want a number of customized settings.

In both situations, we can accommodate your needs. Please contact us about your requirements, and we can discuss our available customized solutions.
